SCHOOL GAMES GOLD AWARD!!! We are delighted to announce that we, Arnside National School, have once again achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2022/23 academic year. The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success. With a total of young people competing in local inter-school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible. As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year. A huge well done to all involved! Go team Arnside!

This curriculum map is to inform parents and teachers which sports and activities will be covered throughout the school year for each year group. Our curriculum map has been designed to ensure that we are providing a broad and balanced program which meets the requirements of the National Curriculum for PE.
Class teachers follow the Get Set 4 PE curriculum, which maps progression of declarative and procedural knowledge from Early Years to Year 6. We focus on teaching the fundamental movement skills and then applying these to a select range of sports and activities so that pupils develop confidence and competence in these areas.
By the end of Year 6, we want pupils to have developed:
• An enjoyment of sport and physical activity and an understanding of the role that they play in leading healthy lifestyles.
• Competence in the fundamental movement skills in order to successfully engage in the KS3 and KS4 curriculum.
• Knowledge of rules, strategies and tactics and their understanding of healthy participation so that they are able to succeed and excel in a range of sports and physical activities.
Children are also encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. We provide inclusive and enjoyable clubs which increases children’s physical activity. Clubs are offered to both KS1 and KS2 children, occasionally Foundation Stage too.

At Arnside National School, class teachers use the Getset4PE scheme of work to deliver quality PE lessons. This scheme allows the children at Arnside National School to access a clear progression of knowledge and skills as they progress through school.
In EYFS, the PE lessons focus on the Foundation Stage of the National Curriculum. This relates to the physical development of the children set out in the Early Learning Goals objectives.
In KS1 and KS2, the children have at least two high-quality PE lessons a week, one hour which follows the prescribed Getset4PE scheme of work and subsequent lesson plans, the other hour taught by our PE and Sport Specialist teacher, Mr Hoare.
In a PE lesson you will see:
A consistent approach of: an introduction to the lesson, a warm-up, skill development and a plenary, an opportunity for collaboration and partner/team discussion, opportunities for the children to work independently and collaboratively, opportunities for the children to perform their acquired skills, opportunities for feedback from other children and the teacher, sport/activity specific vocabulary that builds on the children’s previous learning and a clear progression in knowledge and skills from one-year group to the next

PE Curriculum map outlines the sports covered across the academic year for each year group. Pupils are also encouraged to participate in extra-curricular PE and sporting activities. Lunchtime and after-school clubs are available throughout the week, including Football, Netball, Cross-Country, Gymnastics, Multi-Skills, Rounders, Multi-Sports, Games and Martial Arts.
Through South Lakes School Games Schools and Dallam School Partnership, pupils are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area, such as Football, Netball, Cross-Country, Athletics, Gymnastics, Dodgeball, Kwik Cricket, Basketball, Orienteering, Rounders, Quick Sticks, Sports Hall Athletics, Multi-Sports and Tri-golf.

Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. Children can represent the school at sporting events from local to county level. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children. This document outlines the competitions we will be attending at our local feeder secondary school. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities also build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. All children participate in competitive sport which can be against self and/ or others. We encourage children to transfer the school values and promises to sporting and physical activity, ensuring that they aim to be the very best that they can be.
Alongside this, we share sporting achievements both in and out of school in Celebration Collective Worship, so that we are promoting sports and activities, as well as celebrating all levels of success.

Speed and Agility are important components of fitness. These components are critical fitness factors. They are needed in order to allow children and indeed any athlete to successfully improve and compete in sport and activity. Our Key Stage 2 children take these tests ( in an informal way) so that they can measure their progress and fitness.
